If Disk Utility cannot see the disk then it is hosed. If so post back for instructions on replacing the disk drive and attempting data recovery on your existing drive. Replacing it is not difficult. Recovering the data may be diffictult or impossible.
In the future maintain current backups. Disk drives can fail anytime.
